It’s been almost half of the second semester. You might think an invigorating delicious food when the atmosphere of school festival is cooling down. Here is the Kunsan’s specialty that may beloved by students. That is ‘jap tang.’
What is jap tang?
Jap tang is the food enjoyed by the high school girls and beloved by adults who enjoyed from adolescence. That, existed only in Kunsan, is the soup added with topokki, dumpling, fish cake, eggs, jjolmyeon, ramyun, etc. into a bowl. After bowl was boiled, perilla leaf is placed on the dishes. In the 80s, competition between restaurants created the jap tang. It is characterized by boiling in a large ttukbaegi, making the deep taste in carb snack. The taste of jap tang cooked at the one bowl with various ingredients is rich and deep. It’s like mirroring the seaport of Kunsan’s history that has absorbed various cultures and people for the last 100 years. Even though jap tang may looked like an usual thing, its history has continued for 40 years. Moreover, there is jap tang alley near the Myeongsan-dong now.
Restaurant recommendations
Here is recommended restaurant famous for jap tang. It is called ‘man-nam snack.’ This restaurant is located at 12-12 Myeongsan-dong, Kunsan. At the Myeongsan intersection, go one block to Kunsan Harbor and turn right. If you take a city bus at back gate of the KNU stop, get on the number 71, 12, 11, 34, 33 buses. It costs about 5000 won by taxi. Opening hours are from 11 a.m. ~ 9 p.m. and every month on the second and fourth Monday is closed. A total of 14 tables are there. Although decorated with interior design of 1980s, it looks tidy. A price of every menus is less than 10,000 won except for a set menu. Of course, taking out is possible. Basically, fish cake soup and pickled radish are served. One special thing is that if you order gimbap, it is served along with sweet & spicy red chili-pepper sauce.
