The controversy over the use of newly coined words in Korea
Now days, young people between their teens and 20s often use a newly coined words and these are spreading rapidly. A ‘newly coined word’ means words that not listed as standard among newly coined words and terms. These new words are made up of puns with homophone and similar characters.
People are arguing a lot about the newly coined word used mainly among the younger generation. There are conflicts between the opinion that the use of newly coined words is the main cause of language destruction and the opinion that the newly coined words are a cultural creation that reflects the modern generation. Opinions are very divided on this, and those who support the use of new words say that newly coined words are a creative and unique culture of the generation and they can save time and eliminate the boredom of long words. They also argue that it can be used to communicate with their friends in a friendly way, thus strengthening social relations.
On the other hand, opponents argue that the newly coined words cause conflict between generations. Most of the new words were made on SNS, and the age group that mainly uses SNS is teens and 20s. Therefore, older people, who do not actively use social networking services are not familiar with the newly coined words and feel a generation conflict. The oppositions also say that since language is an agreement among members of the society that uses language, it can’t simply be changed according to individual personal preferences.
Given that the newly coined words used by each age group and the newly coined words used each year are different, it must be a culture that reflects that generation. However, it is also a problem to use newly coined words online indiscriminately. Even though there is an existing exact word to express a certain meaning, people create words that they don't need and use them carelessly. To solve these problems, our efforts are very important. It would be helpful to check the etymology of the newly coined words when you use them, and to find other words to replace them. It is good to communicate with each other in a fun way by using new words, but we think it would be better to take some time to think about whether you are using them indiscriminately.
