Do you know about 3·1(The March 1st) Movement? Do you also know about Yoo Gwan-sun? If you don't know this event and person, you don't know much about Korean history. Please read to this article to learn more.

Japanese occupation in Korea was a painful episode in history. Japan invaded Korea by force and occupied the country over time. Korea launched a nonviolent movement to resolve the issue peacefully without confronting it by force, and this was 3·1(The March 1st) Movement.

The Republic of Korea celebrates the movement using March 1st as a holiday to remember the event. 3·1(The March 1st) Movement was the result of many heroes. Among the heroes is Yoo Gwan-sun, who is one of the most important figures in Korean history.

Yoo Gwan-sun was born in 1902 in Yongdu-ri, Dongmyun, Cheonan County, South Chungcheong Province, and entered Ewha Academy in 1918 as a scholarship student with the help of a missionary. After studying a at the prestigious academy, she saw the harsh Japanese rule and decided to become a girl who would saved a country, like France's Joan of Arc. On March 1st, 1919, she actively participated in the 만세(Manse) Movement (March 1st, 1919) in Seoul and organized a protest group with six fellow students.

Then, she participated in the 만세(Manse) movement at Tapgol Park and Namdaemun Station. In response, Japan ordered to close schools temporarily on March 10th out of fear. Many students, including patriot Yoo Gwan-sun, went to their hometowns to hide the Declaration of Independence. And she urged the people in her hometown to move on.

Yoo Gwan-sun and her hometown's representative Yurim and Jipseongchon planned to launch a "willing campaign" at noon on April 1st in Aunae Market (the place in Byeongcheon-myeon, Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province).

She light a beacon announcing "Hurrah for Korea’s independence" and handed out the national flag to residents at the marketplace in Aunae on April 1st. She shouted "Hurrah for independence" with a crowd of some 3,000 people.

Tragedy happened here. The Japanese police responded with violence. The people, including patriot Yoo Gwan-sun, marched peacefully without any weapons, but Japan overpowered the people with guns and weapons. The previous protest on March 1st had been suppressed in the same way.

Japan crushed the movement with violence, and Yoo's father and mother were massacred by bayonets wielded by the Japanese military police.

The patriot was sentenced to three years in prison. After that, she was transferred from Gongju Prison to Seodaemun Prison. Yoo Gwan-sun, a patriot, campaigned to celebrate the first anniversary of 3·1(The March 1st) Movement even in prison. In response, the patriot, Yoo Gwan-sun, was held in a dungeon and subjected to merciless torture. Nevertheless, she never gave way to Japan. Eventually, she died at the age of 18 in 1920 by torture, but her will for independence was unyielding.

The Korean government and its descendants remember Yoo Gwan-sun. She is also a person who should never be omitted from Korean history.
