Do you want to take a trip in South Korea? Stop by Gunsan while you are traveling South Korea! You can experience both city and countryside in one place, and of course, nice foods are ready for you.

Wherever you depart, the best way to get to Gunsan is by bus. Because Gunsan airport is an army airport, and there is the only airline: Gunsan to Jeju. And there are not many trains that come to Gunsan station.

From Incheon International Airport to Gunsan, there is a limousine bus. It takes about 3 hours and the price is about 30 dollars. The bus information system is at the airport, and it includes instructions in English. If you arrive from another place, you can use the phone application for the intercity bus or express bus. You can check the schedule and reserve the ticket.

There is already a course for visiting Gunsan. This is called ‘Gunsan time travel’ which is good to walk by foot or by bicycle. (There is a public bicycle.) The website is here:

Gunsan was influenced by Japan during the Japanese colonial period, so you can easily find examples of Japanese imperialism. And there are many art galleries and museums. The one thing that I want to recommend is a temple and the traditional teahouse in front of it. It is helpful to comfort your mind and meditate.

If you visit Gunsan, you have to eat two things. They are Jjam-bbong from ‘Jirin-sung’ and bread from ‘Lee-sung dang’. The jjam-bbong in Jirin-sung is only for spicy food lovers. If you can’t eat even ‘buldak stir-fried noodle,’ just visiting the restaurant will be a real challenge for you. A tip for reducing the spicy level is to just pick out all the chili peppers when your dish comes out.

And ‘Lee-sung dang’ in Gunsan is the head office of the oldest bakery in Korea. There is a long line every day, but don’t forget to buy some of the most popular bread (Red bean bread, Vegetable bread).

Of course, there are great hotels in Gunsan, but I recommend to stay in the guesthouse which is nearby the walking-course of the Gunsan time travel. It was built by rich Japanese in the Japanese colonial period. There is a garden and cafe in the middle of it so you can rest well. Also, there is a small bookstore called ‘Mari seosa’ in front of the guesthouse, and I highly recommend it.

I can give you more tips. It is too cold by March because of the sea wind, so you should carry warm clothes if you visit now. And when you arrive at the intercity bus terminal, you can get an English pamphlet. For the map, the NAVER map is the most comfortable application. You can find the best way with GPS. For more information, use ‘Tripadvisor’ which provides information in various languages.
