Political Parties in the U.S.
When you read the headline of this article, maybe you think I‘m not in the U.S.. Whoever is elected in the U.S., I have nothing to do. Yes, you are not directly connected to the election. You might have heard if the U.S. coughs, the world gets cold. This means the U.S. economy affects the world economy. Therefore, you have to be interested in the U.S. presidential election.
Political parties in the United States have a decentralized political power structure. It is difficult for a president to force the administration to comply with his plans. National organization can‘t intervene works of each state so that candidates tend to organize their election campaign by themselves. The election is conducted by candidates rather than political parties.
The United States has a two-party system. The Republican Party (G.O.P) has traditionally strived for federal reduction, increased authority of the state and tended to expand personal freedom and economic activities. Geographically, the approval rating for the G.O.P has been so high in the south, southwest while receiving support from the rich, white men, and Christians. The G.O.P symbolic animal is an elephant, which signifies dignity, gentleness and strength.
The Democratic Party has traditionally underlined promotion of public welfare, increased authority of the Federal Government, income redistribution, guarantee of citizenship. Geographically, the approval rating for the Democratic Party has been high in the north and northeast. The Democratic Party has received support from the neglected class of people such as African Americans and Hispanics. The Democratic Party’s symbolic animal is a donkey, which signifies humbleness, wisdom, courage and . the meaning of an donkey is humble, wise, courageous and rapidness.
The minor political parties have existed, but they can‘t break down the two-party system. Minority parties can generally be classified into the following categories: ① Ideology Party like the G.O.P and Democratic Party; ② Issue Party like Vegetarian Party; ③ Economic resistance party like the People’s Party, and ④ a party established by a specific candidate like the Progressive Party.

The U.S. has adopted indirect vote unlike Korea, but the citizens in a state vote to elect the electoral college. The electoral college is the representative in a state and it has the right to choose the president. That‘s why the electoral college voting and normal citizen voting are different.
Today, let‘s explore the differences between the G.O.P and the Democratic Party affecting on Korea economy. Donald Trump of the G.O.P suggests ① assassinating Kim Jong-un, ② shifting the share of expenses for the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) to Korea, ③ strengthening protectionism and ④ simplifying personal income taxes and legal income taxes.
Hillary Rodham Clinton of the Democratic Party suggests ① applying political pressure to North Korea, ② keeping the traditional Korean and U.S. alliance, ③ maintaining free trade to maximize national interest and ④ adopting the Buffet rule (higher taxes for the rich).
